Our customer, Stéphane, wanted to give his garden more structure and to make use of additional planting space around the border for flowers and plants. As the garden was not a uniform shape, there was an opportunity to use different shapes, sizes and heights of raised beds to create an interesting and productive garden space.

Stéphane’s retaining wall & raised bed garden transformation
The original garden space was a large and uneven area fully covered in grass with a slope to one side. Stéphane’s idea was to build a variety of raised beds so he could begin his growing journey and turn an uninspiring garden into a bright, colourful space for all to enjoy. He also wanted to include a large retaining wall with integrated planters around the edge of the garden design. Planning the Garden
When planning, Stéphane wanted a solution to make use of the slope in the garden. Using our Free Design Service, Stéphane sent his initial sketches and measurements to our designers who got to work to create a bespoke WoodBlocX structure. It was important the top of the steps included in the design finished flush with the gate entrance to the garden. There were additional planters incorporated into the design along with freestanding raised beds in different shapes and heights situated throughout the garden.
Preparation and building
Before commencing the build, it was important that the ground was prepared properly for the large retaining wall to be constructed correctly. Specifically, the ground needed to be prepared for the internal supporting buttresses to be installed. The ground also needed to be completely level to begin the WoodBlocX project build.
Stéphane needed to ensure the other areas of the garden were prepared and level for the raised beds construction to begin. Following the design’s layer-by-layer instructions, each element of the garden design was constructed without the need for power tools or any additional cutting.
Finished Garden
The finished garden is complete with a large retaining wall with integral planters along with various shapes and sizes of raised beds. Stéphane now has plenty of space to add colourful flowers and plants to bring the garden alive!
The retaining wall that follows the border of the garden adds both structural support and a bold visual element, helping to level out sloped ground while seamlessly integrating with the rest of the design. Raised beds run along the perimeter and throughout the turfed area, offering ample growing space for plants, shrubs and vegetables, while also adding structure and defining different zones within the garden.
