If you’re looking to create a productive kitchen garden in your outdoor space, WoodBlocX has the perfect solution. In this featured project, Bernhard wanted to design a dedicated area for growing his own vegetables while ensuring the new addition blended seamlessly with the existing garden.
Bernhard’s raised vegetable garden
The garden was already well established and full of character, but Bernhard wanted to enhance the space by adding a dedicated kitchen garden. Choosing the right location for the raised bed was essential, ensuring it complemented the existing plants and shrubs without disrupting them, while also providing the ideal conditions for growing healthy, productive vegetables.
Planning the Garden
Once the location for the raised bed had been decided, Bernhard used our raised bed calculator to determine the ideal size for his space. He chose a 2.1 x 1.5 x 0.65m design, providing plenty of room to begin growing a variety of vegetables. As the raised bed was being installed on soft ground, ground spikes were included to securely anchor the planter and provide added stability.
Preparation and building
When building with WoodBlocX, it’s essential to ensure the ground is completely level before construction begins. This can be achieved by removing any turf or other surface materials and creating a level base using a suitable material such as sand.
With the ground prepared, Bernhard followed the step-by-step assembly instructions, building the raised bed one layer at a time. For added protection, he installed a protective liner, creating a barrier between the timber and the soil to help maximise the lifespan of the raised bed. Before fitting the final capping layer, the raised bed liner was securely fixed in place.
To complete the planter, Bernhard chose our traditional capping style, featuring a chamfered edge, a slight overhang and neatly mitred corners for a classic finish. Once the capping was fitted, the raised bed was filled with soil and was ready for vegetables to be planted. Find out more about what to grow in raised beds.
Finished Garden
Bernhard’s finished raised bed looks right at home in his garden. Positioned at the centre of the space, it creates an attractive focal point while providing the perfect place to grow a wide variety of vegetables for years to come. To help protect his crops, Bernhard added crop protectors and netting, creating a barrier against insects and helping to keep his vegetables healthy throughout the growing season.
