Laure began transforming her back garden in 2020. It consisted of a very large lawn area – a perfect blank canvas! After installing a fence, Laure planned several raised beds to be built on concrete bases, as well as establishing borders for plants, trees, and shrubs. The second phase involved creating an well-designed space for growing vegetables with a green house and footpath.
Laure’s garden was a very large, open space laid with grass and a few newly-planted trees. It was a blank canvas for a WoodBlocX transformation project! Overall, the garden had good sunlight throughout the year but the optimal space for creating a vegetable growing area was at the back of the garden. Building a kitchen garden at the far end of the lawn also created the opportunity to install an attractive footpath to make the garden more accessible.
Laure used our website’s raised bed calculator to design her own L-shaped configuration. Our smart tool allows customers to choose the shape and dimensions of their planter. After selecting your size, you’ll see an instant price and technical drawing of your design.
Laure designed two tall L-shaped raised beds because she wanted to add structure and shape to her vegetable growing area. Once built opposite each other, this layout would create plenty of planting space whilst being very accessible from all sides.
For the height, she chose 0.65m, which makes it easy to sow, water, and tend to the planting without having to bend over or kneel down. Furthermore, the 1.2m width means the center of the planter is easily reachable for planting. Overall, Laure’s L-shape kit dimensions were L1: 2.25m x L2: 1.875m x W3: 1.2m x W4: 1.2m x 0.65m in height.
Preparation and building
Prior to building, Laure opted to install two concrete bases to support her structures. This work was carried out whilst the footpath and greenhouse base were also being built. Although this is not necessary when building our kits, it does create a perfectly level and solid foundation – something which is very important when building WoodBlocX!
When installing on hard ground, we provide angle floor brackets to secure the first layer of the kit to the floor. For soft ground such as soil and grass, you can choose to include ground spikes with your order which are hammered through into the earth.
Laure’s order included detailed layer-by-layer instructions so building was a breeze! Due to the size of Laure’s L-shaped planters, internal supporting buttresses were also included in the design which give it extra strength. A protective liner was also installed internally to maximise the lifespan of the raised beds.
Assembling the two planters took just one day, making WoodBlocX the perfect DIY weekend project! Laure found the installation quick and easy thanks to the lightweight components and clear building instructions.
Finished Garden
The two L-shaped raised planters have been built side by side in a reverse mirror layout to create a very attractive design which allows for gardening around all sides. Gravel has been added around the structures to finish off the new kitchen garden area.
Laure selected to use our traditional capping layer to finish off the design of her kits which is our best-selling style. This traditional type of capping has a slight overhang of 12.5 mm on each side – we also offer a flush, modern capping version which is only available through our Free Design Service.
The raised beds are perfectly positioned near the greenhouse and the new footpath leads you back to the property. This allows Laure to sow seeds in her greenhouse and transplant the seedlings into the planters when they’re ready to grow. Now filled with soil, Laure plans to grow courgettes, peas, carrots, radishes, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, and she’s even going to try melons!
Here's what Laure said about her project: "We were looking for information online about raised vegetable gardens and came across WoodBlocX. We were impressed by the ability to design our own planters! The quality of the materials and the home delivery were the final words to convince us to place our order. The WoodBlocX structures have enabled us to create a beautiful raised growing area for a huge variety of fruit and vegetables."
