When Andrea moved to her new home she was keen to update the front garden. It originally had an extremely large conifer, two pencil conifers and other shrubs. The conifers almost covered the pathway to the house and together the trees and shrubs made the living room, at the front of the house dark.

Andrea’s front garden planter update
To let more light into the house and to open up the space, the trees needed to be removed. Andrea waited until the birds had finished nesting and gradually took the trees and shrubs out, ready for the next stage of her front garden update.
Planning the Garden
The design Andrea had in mind was neat, tidy and easy to maintain without being too big. She looked into the different options available, including railway sleepers, but wanted something that could achieve the design she had in mind, to be long-lasting and most importantly, could be built by her. She submitted her ideas to our Free Design Service, and our team used her measurements to create a full outline of the design presented in a personalised PDF Design Pack.
The final planter design consisted of three raised beds arranged in a corner / L-shape formation. The central raised bed was a bespoke pentagon shape which was taller than the two rectangular raised beds which joined it at either side.
Preparation and building
Andrea found building WoodBlocX super easy! The ground preparation was the most time intensive as she needed to ensure it was level. To prepare the ground, Andrea laid ground matting to suppress weed growth and compacted the earth before adding a plastic liner under the perimeter of the WoodBlocX structure to maximise its lifespan.
Building on level ground ensures that the BlocX fit together as they should. Following this ensures each layer remains level and correct as you build the kit following the layer by layer instructions. To learn more about how to build WoodBlocX, please see our General Buildings Instructions.
Finished Garden
Andrea’s bespoke WoodBlocX raised bed design has created a great front garden feature – making a very attractive area to park the car! It creates a boundary between the pavement and gravel driveway, framing the space without being imposing. She has filled the raised borders with a mixture of colourful plants and shrubs. Her driveway is now light and bright and has been totally transformed!
Using our modern capping style, which finishes flush with WoodBlocX gives the planter a contemporary look. When using our Free Design Service, you can choose either our Traditional or Modern capping styles when ordering.
WoodBlocX front garden transformation
Andrea's two tiers of planting give plenty of space to plant a mix of plants and shrubs. As they grow and mature this border of planting will create a great privacy screen at the front of the house. The bespoke corner angle design of the planter frames the gravel driveway, creating an easy to maintain front garden border.
