Jeroen was looking to enhance his garden and with border space available running alongside a garden path he was keen to create a kitchen garden to grow and harvest vegetables.

Jeroen’s L-shaped kitchen garden
The space in Jeroen’s garden was long and narrow with a path running close by. The dimensions of the area meant that the planter design would need to be narrow at one end and wider at the other. The ground was unused and uninviting which always makes the perfect canvas to build WoodBlocX!
Planning the Garden
Using our Free Design Service, Jeroen got in touch with his idea and provided the dimensions of the space. Our design team created a long L-shaped raised planter that fitted the available space perfectly. The long L-shape will give Jeroen ample space for a kitchen garden to grow and harvest vegetables.
Preparation and building
The soil was fairly level, however minimal groundwork was necessary to ensure a flat surface for the build to begin. Jeroen used sand to ensure the ground was level before the first layer of WoodBlocX was installed.
As the raised bed was built on soft ground, Jeroen used ground spikes to secure the structure. WoodBlocX can be built on all grounds types such as grass, soil, concrete, tarmac and paving slabs, with angle floor brackets available for hard ground types. The raised bed was lined to add a protective layer to the timber. Jeroen followed the layer-by-layer instructions to add each WoodBlocX row and the design was finished off with our traditional capping which has a slight 12.5mm overhang on each side. We also offer a modern capping option however, this is only available for customers through our Free Design Service.
Finally, Jeroen initially filled the raised bed with twigs (inspired by the Hugelkultur method), his own compost and organic soil before planting began.
Finished Garden
The finished, long L-shaped planter perfectly fits the space available, bringing an otherwise under-used part of the garden to life. The height and length of the raised bed offers ample space for Jeroen to grow his own vegetables. He has reported that his first crop has been harvested and was a success! Jeroen's thoughts on his project
"The final result is a beautiful kitchen garden container from which the first vegetables have already been harvested. All in all, a very satisfied customer!"
