David’s garden consisted of a large turfed area with a selection of potted plants and shrubs around the border. He was looking to add a space where he could grow shrubs and plants as well as to provide a seating area to relax and enjoy the garden.
David’s L-shaped planter with seating
David’s existing garden area comprised of a relatively flat turfed area with ample space to build a large raised planter. To make best use of the space, an L-shaped structure would fit neatly into the corner of the fence.
Planning the Garden
In order to make the best use of the available space, David looked at options to include an integrated seating and planting area within the garden. David chose our large L-shaped planter with seating pre-designed kit. The kit’s dimensions, 3.75 x 3.75 x 0.65m, would provide ample space for growing as well as a generous seating area to enjoy the garden.
Preparation and building
To start, David laid out the first layer of WoodBlocX in the area when the planter was going to be situated. He then worked with the ground and removed some turf to ensure the ground was completely level before beginning the build. We recommend ensuring that the ground is completely level before beginning the build, this can be achieved by using products such as sand to level the ground. Once the ground was level, David followed the step by step instructions to start building the planter.
As the raised planter was being built on soft ground, David used ground spikes to secure the planter in place. WoodBlocX can be built on any surface, we offer angle brackets to secure our kits to hard ground types such as concrete, paving and patios.
When building a raised bed, it is important to add a protective liner for extra protection which provides a barrier between the timber and soil, helping to ensure the lifespan of the raised bed. Before adding the final capping layer, David secured a raised bed liner in place. Once the final capping layer was added, David filled the bed with soil and began planting shrubs and plants.
Finished Garden
The finished L-shaped raised bed planter with integrated seating sits perfectly in David’s garden. Providing ample space for growing and socialising, the L-shaped design fits nicely into the corner of the garden, ideal for taking advantage of the sunny weather. The seating element of the design provides a welcoming space to socialise with friends and family for many years to come.
