Ludovic wanted to enhance his outdoor space by replacing an existing raised bed positioned along a wall. He was looking for a more structured and practical solution that would make better use of the available space whilst giving him plenty of room to grow a variety of vegetables and herbs.
Ludovic’s tiered raised bed
The existing raised bed was positioned against a wall between two patio areas, with plenty of space available for a replacement. Thanks to the flexibility of WoodBlocX, a bespoke raised bed could be designed to perfectly fit the available area and make the most of the space.
Planning the Garden
As Ludovic wanted to maximise the space for growing vegetables, a tiered raised bed offered significantly more growing area than a traditional rectangular design similar to the one previously in place.
Using our Free Design Service, Ludovic worked with the WoodBlocX design team to create a bespoke solution tailored to the space and his growing needs.
The finished planter measured 3.22m x 0.75m, with the higher raised bed reaching 0.55m in height and the lower planter standing at 0.35m. The tiered design made better use of the available space while providing plenty of room for growing a variety of vegetables.
Preparation and building
As there was already a raised bed in place, minimal ground preparation was required before the installation could begin. It is important to ensure the ground is completely level before building any WoodBlocX structure, as this helps provide a stable and secure foundation.
As Ludovic’s raised bed was being installed on soft ground, the structure was secured using ground spikes. WoodBlocX can also be installed on hard surfaces, including patios, concrete and tarmac, where angle brackets can be used to securely fix the structure in place.
Following the step-by-step instructions provided, Ludovic built the raised bed layer by layer. Once the structure was complete, a liner was secured to the inside of the planter. We recommend using a DPM liner to create a barrier between the soil and the timber, helping to protect the WoodBlocX and prolong the lifespan of the structure.
With the liner in place, Ludovic filled the planters with soil, ready for planting with his choice of vegetables, herbs and plants.
Finished Garden
The finished planter makes excellent use of the available space, creating a practical and attractive addition to Ludovic’s garden. The long, double-tiered design provides plenty of growing space for a wide variety of vegetables, giving Ludovic and his family the opportunity to enjoy generous homegrown harvests throughout the growing season.
Positioned between two patio areas, the raised bed also helps to seamlessly connect different parts of the garden, creating an eye-catching feature that is both functional and visually appealing.
