Ian was looking to add a couple of new rectangular raised beds to his garden to match the existing WoodBlocX raised bed he already had. The additional planters would give Ian ample space to continue his vegetable growing journey.
Ian’s raised bed vegetable garden
As you can see from the before image, the space next to the existing raised bed was a simple paved area. By adding more raised beds to the area, Ian could make full use of the space and increase the amount of vegetables that he could grow.
Planning the Garden
As Ian already had a WoodBlocX raised bed, it was important to ensure the same size was selected to ensure uniformity across the garden design. Using our online raised bed calculator, the dimensions chosen were length 1.5m x width 2.625m x height 0.65m. Ian had planned to add the additional two beds to complement the existing raised bed in order to give ample space to continue his vegetable growing journey.
Preparation and building
Initially, the ground was prepared by removing the paving slabs to expose the soft ground underneath. With this ground type, we supply ground spikes to secure the raised bed in place. WoodBlocX can be built on any surface, we offer angle brackets to secure our kits to hard ground types such as concrete, paving and patios.
Prior to laying the first row of WoodBlocX, Ian ensured the ground was completely level as it is vitally important to begin the build on flat ground. Ian then added a protective liner for extra protection which provides a barrier between the timber and soil, helping to ensure the lifespan of the raised bed. Before adding the final capping layer, Ian secured a raised bed liner in place.
Ian chose our traditional capping style to complete the planter, the style is chamfered, has a slight overhang and is mitred at the corners – learn more about our capping layer options here. Once the final capping layer was added, Ian filled the bed with soil ready for vegetables to be sown.
Finished Garden
Ian’s finished raised planters look great alongside his existing WoodBlocX planter in the garden. The initial planter has been stained to be in keeping with the colour of the new raised beds. The trio of planters create a wonderful focal point of the garden with ample space to grow an array of vegetables. Ian has chosen to add crop protectors to the raised beds to protect his crops from all sorts of garden pests. Our raised beds can also be used to plant flowers, shrubs and herbs – the choice is yours!
Ian's thoughts on his project
"I have replaced two old planters of the same style with new ones. They now compliment the third one. Great for growing vegetables each year. A versatile and robust product."
