Ryan's Stepped BBQ Area
A family-centred outdoor space
A family-centred outdoor space
When Ryan contacted us he was looking for ideas to transform his sloping garden which was made up of railway sleepers and a brick wall and steps which were in a poor condition. His vision was to create a multifunctional area that could be used for planting, BBQs and entertaining, general day-to-day use by him and his family. He considered replacing the original structure with brick walls however the labour costs would have taken him over his budget, after some research he found WoodBlocX which ticked all of his boxes for the project as it was within budget, he was certain we could create a design which would work and he could build it himself. He used our Free Design Service we worked collaboratively with him to create a low maintenance design.
We created an L-shaped design which helped to tackle the steep slope and retain the earth, the design included a retaining wall a the top to create a boundary between the lawn and the first planter, then two tiers of planters bring the design down to a seating area which could comfortably seat up to six people. Plus a set of WoodBlocX steps create better access to the top and bottom of the garden.

Ryan: "I first got in touch with WoodBlocX as I wanted to build a retaining wall to create a space where I could meet with my friends and use the barbecue in the summer. I realised WoodBlocX was the ideal solution as they offered a bespoke design service and could do everything I needed in one go; the wall, the flowerbeds and the steps. It was much easier than having three or more separate projects, bringing in a builder to make the wall and muddling my way around some brick steps!
I did have a builder come to discuss the retaining wall and he quoted £6,000!! That was before we started making the steps and putting in planters and benches. With something like WoodBlocX and the free design service, I was able to talk to the guys and make sure what I was doing was going to be strong enough, and I was able to do it myself. All in all, it saved me a lot of money."
Ryan: "The free design service was a great part of the package, and I could build it all myself, I did not need any special skills or expertise, so that really appealed to me. The price was also a very important reason. I love the finished look and everyone who has visited has been so impressed with the quality!"
