Abi’s L-shaped raised planters

Abi wanted to improve her garden by installing a new patio decking area to socialise and enjoy outdoor dining. She was looking to incorporate raised beds to frame the decking, creating a defined space while providing room for shrubs and flowers to grow.

The garden was a relatively flat, blank canvas area which was in need of some landscaping and a larger patio area for Abi and her family to relax and enjoy. The original patio spaces were not fit for purpose so the initial plan was to add a new decking area before exploring different options of raised beds.

Planning the Garden

To begin the project, the first step was to choose the type of patio area. Abi chose a composite decking, installed expertly by Kiwiscapes. Once the decking was in place, measurements were taken to decide the correct size of raised beds.

After a discussion with the WoodBlocX design team, Abi decided to go with two L-shaped planters that would perfectly frame each side of the decking. This would leave a space for the original path as well as a space in the middle of the decking, where a path could be added should Abi choose to add this. Using our Free Design Service, the dimensions of the raised beds were carefully chosen as it was important to ensure there was optimal space for planting without taking up too much of the lawn area.

Preparation and building

When preparing the ground prior to building the WoodBlocX, Abi removed the turf and levelled the ground to ensure it was flat before laying the first layer. We recommend ensuring that the ground is completely level before beginning the build, this can be achieved by using products such as sand to level the ground. Once the ground was level, Abi, with the help of her daughter, followed the step-by-step instructions to start building the planter.

As the raised planters were being constructed on soft ground, Abi used ground spikes to anchor it securely in place. As WoodBlocX structures can be built on any surface, we also offer angle brackets for fixing kits to solid surfaces like concrete, paving and patios.

When constructing a raised bed, it’s vitally important to install a protective liner to create a barrier between the timber and soil which helps to extend the lifespan of the structure. Before fitting the final capping layer, Abi secured the liner in place. Once the capping was in place, she filled the bed with soil and started planning what plants and shrubs to plant. Given the harsh winters that Abi’s garden will be subjected to, it was important to ensure the shrubs were going to withstand the elements. Abi chose a selection of evergreen plants, including hebe and heather, to ensure the raised beds have some greenery all year round.

Abi repeated these steps to build the second L-shaped raised bed to create a symmetrical solution to frame the patio.

Finished Garden

Abi’s garden has been completely transformed with the addition of a new decking area, perfectly framed by two WoodBlocX L-shaped raised beds. The planters bring structure to the social space while introducing much-needed greenery and colour.

To complete the look, Abi chose our modern capping style for the raised beds. We also offer a more traditional option which can be chosen when ordering – view our capping styles here.

The south-facing garden makes the most of the sunlight, and Abi and her family now have a beautiful outdoor space to enjoy for years to come.
