Kevin's raised pond

Kevin had recently renovated his house and added a beautiful porcelain patio which overlooked his garden. He was keen to add a raised pond to the space as the garden had a large existing ground level pond where he kept some koi, however, the pond needed to be covered over to keep his dog away from the fish and for the safety of children.

Planning the garden

Using our raised pond calculator, Kevin selected the sizes he wanted. The handy calculator tool allows you to design your own small or large raised pond and will instantly visualise the design for you along with showing a price.

As Kevin would be building the pond directly on to his patio he selected to receive a set of strong angle floor brackets when prompted. These are used to fix the structure to the ground. For structures built on grass or soil (soft ground), we supply ground spikes instead.

Preparation and building

The patio area where the raised pond was going to be built was already level so the pond could be built directly on top. The first stage of building was laying out the first layer of BlocX to determine exactly where the structure would sit on the patio.

The next stage was adding the dowels to the first layer of BlocX, once complete the second layer was built up. At this stage there was still an opportunity to move the structure if needed. Kevin used a diamond drill bit and a drill to fix the angle floor brackets to the patio and used the screws provided to fix the brackets to the first layer of the raised pond. Kevin then continued to build up the BlocX to the final layer before adding the liner.

He added an underlay fleece to protect the bottom of the liner and keep it off the ground, installed the liner using the final layer dowels, filled the pond half way to help the liner find its place and then added the finishing capping layer as the raised garden pond filled up with water to the top!

The finished pond design

The completed design now features aquatic plants and fish from the original ground-level pond. Kevin is thrilled with the outcome and the pond has become a stunning feature on his patio, sitting naturally within the rest of the garden design.

Kevin said:

"The build was very quick, I was initially worried that adding the floor brackets may damage the patio, but I needn't have worried, I can see why this process is such an integral part of building a raised pond on a hard surface.

"I am so pleased with the finished pond, I absolutely love it and receive so many comments about it from friends and visitors."
