Marina's Mini Veg Garden

Our customer Marina, who lives in northern Italy, had an area of her garden that she wanted to transform into a productive vegetable plot and a space to grow cut flowers using raised beds. However, the size and shape of the space were a little awkward, so she needed some help working out the best raised bed layout that would maximise the space and look good.

Planning the garden

Marina sent a request via our Free Design Service with a diagram of the raised beds she wanted along with the measurements and a photo of the area she wanted to transform. The compact area was 2m x 3m x 3.3 with the back wall running on an angle. Maria had also drawn her own layout.

Our designer Harry recreated the layout using WoodBlocX and was able to suggest an improved design based on the space available whilst ensuring there was enough room for Marina and her partner to move easily around the raised planters for watering, tending and harvesting.

The result was an L-shaped configuration which included the original shapes suggested by Marina - one square raised bed and two rectangular raised beds.

Preparation and building

The elevated position of Marina's garden meant that WoodBlocX was a great product for her awkward space as all of the components arrive on a pallet and can be easily carried by hand to the rear garden for building.

The area where the raised beds were to be built had already been levelled out and as they were being built on soil (soft ground) the kit included ground spikes which secured the structure to the ground.

The raised beds were built up swiftly and were filled with quality soil ready for planting.

The finished design

Marina opted for Modern capping (available through our Free Design Service) as the finish for each of her raised bed designs and, filled them with soil, added an irrigation system and swiftly planted them out with vegetables. Crushed stone was also added to the ground around the beds to finish off the area.

It is safe to say that the positioning of the planters is working well as the structures were built in April and these photos for our case study were taken in early July with everything already in full bloom!

Marina is proud of her new veg garden and is enjoying growing tomatoes, courgettes, dahlias and gladioli.
