Peter's bespoke planter bench

Peter's medium-sized garden contained a flower bed sitting beside his lawn; the bed contained lots of different plants and also lots of weeds, which were proving difficult to stay on top of due to the large nature of the bed.  In order to make tending this large border easier, Peter settled on installing raised beds as a solution to his problem, this would allow the plants to be contained and for weeding and tending to the space much easier.

Planning the garden

Having settled on raised beds as a solution, Peter discounted using railway sleepers as, his wife wouldn't be able to move them around the garden and was not keen on the cutting and measuring. They settled on WoodBlocX due to the lightweight components and ease of build, and used our website to find inspiration for their design.

They used our Free Design Service and provided our design team with a brilliantly detailed drawing with dimensions, the drawing included a planter bench and several raised planters of different heights.

Our designer Harry, worked on Peter's design, taking the drawing and measurements and transferred it into a WoodBlocX design.

Preparation and building

Peter began removing the plants from the border and potting them temporarily in plant pots ready for replanting once the structure was built.

He began building in May and got the base layer in place, but unfortunately the weather had other plans! The site became quite waterlogged, as he was building on clay soil, and several days were lost waiting for the water to subside. Once the area was dry, the building of the bespoke design was swift and the structure was lined ahead of more rain delaying completion! Following that, Peter added fresh topsoil for replanting and added bark around the edges which would provide easy access to the planters and the seat in all weathers.

The finished design

Peter's final design features a central Planter Bench with a planter on either side of the same height and an additional taller planter; it has been finished with our modern capping and planted out with herbs, heathers, and perennial plants. Many of them were saved from the original flower bed.

Peter's thoughts on WoodBlocX

"As a retired university lecturer in Physics I have  always thrived in solving problems.  This particular problem was strenuous but extremely satisfying. I wondered several times whether I would ever finish it especially with the appalling weather that we have had in the summer of 2024. WoodBlocX modular construction units are a joy to use. Every piece slotted together like a dream. The wooden blocks are machined to a high degree of tolerance and the plastic dowels fitted easily together. Given the chance I would look for another project but unfortunately I have no more room. I have thoroughly enjoyed constructing the raised beds and am very pleased with the finished project."
